Terminal Emulator

A terminal emulator allows you work at the command line. In addition some terminal emulators allow you to access a remote computer.

It will be very common for you to be sitting in front of one computer and wish to use the resources on another computer. One way to do this is to use a terminal emulator.

  • On linux there are a number of terminal emulators
    • xterm
    • terminal
  • On windows our choice is putty

If you are programming from home, you will most likely want to use PUTTY to connect to the department's compute servers. You will probably want to install putty on your home computer.

Putty is installed in all of our windows labs.

See the PUTTY page for information on using putty.
