Definition Quizzes

Most days there will be a definition quiz. This quiz will be given during the first five minutes of the class and will consist of a few questions from the Concept/Writing Exercises of the section covered in the previous lesson. You may use your notes or extra credit notebook while taking these quizzes. You may not use your book to answer quiz questions.

Since you are permitted to use notes, your answers are expected to be reasonably close to those provided in the book. For example, section 11.1 has the following questions:

  1. What is a percent?
  2. Explain how to change a percent to a decimal number.
  3. Explain how to change a fraction to a percent.
Reasonable answers would include
  1. A percent, meaning parts per hundred, is a ratio of some number to 100.
    1. Divide the number by 100.
    2. Remove the percent sign.
    1. Divide the numerator by the denominator to obtain a decimal number.
    2. Multiply the decimal number by 100.
    3. Add the percent sign.

Quizzes will be worth 5 points each, 1 point for you name, 2-4 points for mostly correct answers and 5 points for all answers correct. When in doubt, use answers from the book.

To prepare for these quizzes, (as well as for the homework and tests), I would type up the questions and answers from the Concept/Writing Exercises exercises of each section covered.

If we do not cover part of a section, you will not be quizzed on that portion.

These quizzes may not be made up in the case of absence, however, I will only count 80% quiz points towards your grade. There will be 25 quizzes this semester, so you will once you have earned 100 quiz points you will have full credit for this portion of your grade.
