Length, Area and Volume
Goals
- Define and use the formula for calculating area of rectangular shapes
- Define and use the formula for calculating the area of a circle
- Define and use the formula for calculating the area of a rectangular volume
- Define and use the formula for calculating the volume of a cylinder
Discussion
- The area A of a rectangular object which is l units long and w units wide is given by A = lw;
- The area A of a circle, with radius r is given by A = πr2
- The volume V of a regular rectangular volume l units long, w units wide and h units high is given by V = lwh
- The volume V of a cylinder is given by V = πr2h
- The correct unit to use is tricky, but usually we want things to be between 1 and 999.
- so 1000cm is probably better expressed as 10m
- 1 m3 = 1 kl, liquid measure to volume
