Grades

Grades will be assigned as follows:

Points	Grade
0 - 354	F
355 - 414	D
415 - 474	C
475 - 539	B
540 - 600	A

I reserve the right to lower the ranges in this table if I feel that it is appropriate. I will not raise the standards of performance.

Your grade will consist of the following components:

Daily Homework Quizzes:	100 points
Tests:	300 points
Final Exam:	200 points

Homework:

I will assign homework problems for each section. These problems will provide the basis for daily quizzes, tests and the final exam. I will not collect and grade the homework, but may, from time to time, allow you to use your homework papers on quizzes.

You should correctly solve, and understand, all homework problems assigned. If you are having problems with the homework, there are a number of resources which may assist you.

Ask questions in class!
Come to my office hours.
Find someone in this class and form a tutoring group.
The university has a number of tutoring programs, check them out here
There will be some tutoring available in the Math Department, more information on this later.
The publisher has a Tutor Center, but it looks like it will cost a one time fee of $25 to use it.

Please note, I feel that the last week of the semester is too late to begin a tutoring program. If you are having troubles get help early.

Please do your homework in a serious manner. Just looking at the problems and thinking about how you might solve them will not do. Work them out as you would on a test or quiz.

Please note that many homework problems are close to the examples, from the book and in class, and following the solutions presented there can be helpful. It is also helpful to follow the same "form" of the solutions presented when solving your own problem.

For Example:

Solve for x 3(x+2)-4=2(x+1)

     3(x+2)-4=2(x+1)
     3*x + 3*2 -4 = 2*x + 2*1
     3x +6 -4 = 2x + 2
     3x +2 = 2x + 2
     3x +2 - 2 = 2x +2 - 2
     3x = 2x 
     3x - 2x = 2x -2x  
     x = 0
     Check 
     3(0+2) - 4 = 2*(0+1)
     3*2-4 = 2*1 
     2 = 2

So when you solve 2(x+3)+2=3(x-2)

     2x+6+2=2x+8-3x+6=-x+14=x=14
     x = 14

would not be acceptable work.
