• A form of argument where the conclusion is inferred from the premises.
• At least one of the premises contains a phrase in the form
  • Some ____ are ___

  • All ____ are _____
  • No _____ are ___
  • ____ is a _____
  • _____ is not a _______
• Example:

  All German shepherds are dogs.
  All dogs bark.
  ∴
  All German shepherds bark.
      

• We will analyze these arguments using Euler diagrams.
  • This is essentially a twist on Venn diagrams.

• Let G be the set of German shepherds
  Let D be the set of Dogs
  Let B be the set of barking things.
  By the  first statement, G is somewhere inside of D
  By the second statement, D is contained in  B
  Thus G must be contained in B
