What I Intend to Cover.
- I am going to try to work our way through the book
- Finding interesting problems and data to match as we go.
- You should already know or pick up on your own 1-3, 6, 7, 9
- Some don't seem important to this class: 8, 15
- I will probably cover parts of some fairly quickly
- Some were material from DSCI 101/CSCI 104 but should probably have more depth
- Some are definitely new (like most of the rest of the book)
- I will have to add some supplementary material
- Getting data from a database.
- There may be others.
- You should
- Look through the chapters and see if there is anything you really want to do.
- Are there any topics (not in the book) you wish to cover?
- Please let me know.
- I feel that the most important outcome of this class is a deeper understanding of excel.
- And I am willing to adjust what we do to make that happen.
- Do you need the book?
- It seems to me like a good reference book
- The problem is not finding references
- It is knowing what references to look for
- And a book like this concentrates the references.
- I will probably NOT provide full level picture-circle-arrow instruction on how to perform tasks covered in the book
- I expect you to be able to find these in the book.
- The book is only $32 used on amazon
- If I were you, I would skim chapters 1-3
- It contains things that might be helpful
- For example, page 9 contains a quick navigation chart.
- Page 30 discusses numeric limits
- Did you know excel can do fractions? See page 42
- Start excel
- enter 0 1/2 in a cell
- You need the 0 otherwise it will think excel is a date and confuse things greatly.
- Can you do this?
-
- Only enter the 1/2 and 1/3
- Compute the 5/6
- Can you do this?
-
- Only enter the fractions across the top.
- Use a copy and paste special to get the left hand row.
-
- Enter a single function in the 1/2 + 1/2 cell that can be copied across the entire table.
- I had to customize the formatting to get the fractions right.
- I had to change the formatting of the 1 to get it to align properly.
- Click for solution
- I will always answer questions on how I did something but you must ask.
- Excel, windows, ....
- Ya, I know, I want to use linux, John wants to use his Mac, ...
- But Excel on Windows is somewhat of a standard.
