Preliminary Work
Microsoft Office
- I want to start using Microsoft Office soon.
- If it is not installed on your home computer you will need to do so.
There are at least three versions of Microsoft available
- Microsoft Office 2019 Professional
- This is a product for businesses (I have it on my university machines)
- You pay for the product once.
- You need to purchase the next version when it comes out.
- I don't think you have "free" access to this software.
- Microsoft Office 365
- This is a subscription service.
- You have access to this for "free"
- The university uses your tech fee to pay for your subscription while you are here.
- It is probably a better choice as it is updated constantly.
- Microsoft Office Online
- This is completely free, runs in a browser
- But it has reduced capabilities.
- Frequently described as "lightweight"
- This will not do for our purposes.
- If you are working in a browser, you are using Office Online.
- Here are
instructions for installing Office 365 on your personal computer.
- Several solutions will not work
- I am a huge fan of open software, but we need to use Word and Excel
- OpenOffice or LibreOffice just will not do.
- The on line versions Office Online(that run in a browser) will not do either.
- Office2019 and Office 365 both have features that are not available in the on line version.
- I have a copy of Office 2019 Professional Plus installed and that is what I will use.
- There will be slight differences (mostly interface) between that and Office 365, but this is not a problem.
- Install Office 365 this week
- Storage
- We will be using quite a few files.
- Unless you are really tight on disk space you will probably be fine.
- You can use cloud storage, or even a USB device.
- I will try to post notes for the day early, but I may not be s
- Downloads/Files
- I will try to post notes for the day early, but I may not be completely finished until class time.
- At the top of most notes will be a file we will use today, or some similar phrase
- You might want to go to the pages and download the files early.
- We will probably have days when
- We don't finish a lecture.
- We start a new lecture using the workbook we worked on last time.
- I will try to provide a link to the in progress worksheet on the.
- Tech problems in general
- This is not a "put it off and it will go away" thing.
- Get your software working now.
- Make sure you have a place to store things now.
- If something goes wrong, or you are confused GET HELP NOW.
- I can help
- With Zoom I can connect to your computer directly.
- We have help desk support at the university and department.
- Last thought, if you need equipment
- There is a supply of laptops available for check out.
- There is also a virtual client you might try. Contact me if you are interested.
