Project 1: Continuing with the Report

• Last time we built an outline for a proposal report.
  • If you wish, you can use this copy.
• We are working with the 2019 Chicago Movies in the Park Dataset.

• Our first task is to document our source material.
  • This is from page 274 of the book.
  • For any information, thoughts, ideas you use in a paper that are not your own, you need to cite a source.
• Word has a tool that allows you to do this.
  • This is a simple tool.
  • There are others that might be better, but we will look at word's citation manager and bib tool.
• A few notes of caution
  • You need to make sure that you are using the required citation style
    • For this class, it is based on your discipline. (APA, MLA, Chicago, ...)
      • Your choice, be consistent.
    • For other classes, see the instructions or your instructor.
    • If you need, you can create your own custom bib style, but that is outside the scope of this class.
    • You might find what you need here. (Caution, I have not vetted this site).
  • GIGO: Garbage In Garbage Out
    • When using this, or any other database tool, make sure you fill in the fields accurately.
• Adding a citation

  • In word, go to the References tab on the Citations & Bibliography workgroup select the proper style in the Style dropdown.

    • It is best to select the style you will use now, different styles ask for different information.
    • Let's use APA for today.
  • Press the Manage Sources button to bring up the Source Manager dialog box.
  • 
  • Click the New button to add a new source to your master list.
  • Fill in the Create Source form
    • Pay attention to the bottom of the screen for formatting information.
    • 
  • Notice you can edit and delete sources here as well.
• Create a citation for the data web page.
  • Mark the type as Web site
  • Fill in today's date.
  • 
• Use the citation.
  • Move to the Introduction section of the document and add the following sentence

  • Recent studies have demonstrated that using movies in parks and recreation education can be beneficial.
    	    

  • This is one of the conclusions in the journal article we just added, so we need to cite the source.

  • Move to the end of the sentence.
  • On the References tab select Insert Citation and select the correct article on the dropdown menu.

  • This will insert the proper citation.
  • 
• Insert another citation.
  • Under The Dataset add a sentence stating that the dataset was acquired from the City of Chicago Data portal.
  • Then cite the portal.
• Building a Bib
  • Move to the end of the document.
  • In the Citations section, select the Bibliography dropdown.

  • Insert a bib.
  • 
• Update the TOC
  • Move to the TOC area
  • Click in the TOC and select Update Table
  • 
  • You added new items for the TOC so select Update the Entire Table and click OK
  • 
• Update ALL tables as shown
• If there is a tool, you should not do this by hand.
• Notice, you can tell that the TOC, Citation and BIB were created using a tool.
  • I WILL look for this on homework and tests.
  • Don't mock it up, learn to use the tool.
• Change the bib style, watch what happens.
• The citation manager will keep sources for citation in other papers.
