Full Page Numbering Example
- Please start with document.
- The documentation standards state
- No page numbers on the cover.
- Toc
- starts on page ii
- At the bottom of the page, centered.
- Regular text
- Upper right hand
- In Arabic numerals
- Starting at 1
- Bib
- So let's format the document this way.
- These are the steps
- Finish the document, creating sections as necessary to accomplish other tasks.
- Notice our document has several different sections due to formatting.
- Divide the chapters with Page Breaks
- Location
- One break between the TOC and the main body
- One break before each chapter
- One break before the start of the Bib
- Type
- If all of the pages are the same, use Next Page
- If you odd or even page starts, use Odd or Even Page breaks.
- Insert these now.
- Use Next Page for everything up to section 4.
- Use Odd Page for section 4
- Starting at the top set up the page format options you want for each section.
- If there are major changes, turn off link to previous
- If using different first page, or odd or even pages
- format the first, second and even third pages differently.
- Set the format
- Location of page number
- Page number to start with.
- Page number format...
- WATCH to make sure you have done the right thing.
- Implementing the Page Numbers
- Move to the TOC
- Note Different First Page is selected.
- So add a page number at the bottom of the page.
- Edit the page number to make it
- Start at page 1, not 0
- Use Roman Numerals.
- Move to section two (Heading 1)
- Note, there is a a page number at the bottom of the second page of this section.
- Fix the footer
- Move to the first page of this section (First Page Footer -Section 2-)
- If link to previous is set, unset it.
- Different First Page is checked, so uncheck it.
- It is likely that if you change this, link to previous will be turned back on. If so, turn it off.
- Delete the page number here.
- Check to see that the title page and the TOC are still numbered correctly.
- If not, fix them, if so, smile and move on.
- Not fix the header
- Move back to the first header in section 2.
- Turn link to previous off.
- If different first page is on, turn it off.
- Turn link to previous off if it came back on.
- Insert a page number in the upper right hand corner
- Check to see the following pages are correct.
- Page 2 is good, but page 3 doesn't have a number.
- This is due to the multiple columns break.
- Go to the header
- Turn off link to previous.
- Turn off Different First Page
- Turn off link to previous if you need to.
- Format the page numbers to Continue from previous section not restart at 0.
- Check all pages above to make sure they are numbered correctly
- Fix everything through page 10.
- It looks like all we need to do is mark the page numbers to continue from the previous section
- CAUTION this was not the case in previous versions of word. We would also need to turn off Link to Previous
- Chapter 4
- For this document, we will
- Have a different first page with a page number at the bottom.
- Have different even and odd pages.
- Start by looking at the first page of chapter 4.
- This is numbered 13, why not 12?
- In the heading on page 13
- Remove the link to previous.
- Check Different Odd & Even Pages
- Delete the page number
- Go to the footer on page 13.
- Remove the link to previous.
- Make sure Different First Page is checked.
- Insert a page number at the bottom.
- Double check to make sure everything above is working.
- Move to page 14.
- Remove the link to previous.
- Check Different Odd & Even Pages
- Remove the link to previous.
- Insert the page number on the left hand side of the page.
- Looks like the odd numbered pages are good.
- Check to make sure that everything is still good above.
- The bib
- Change the footer at the bottom of the page.
- Make sure that different first page is turned off
- Delete the page number
