The literature review
- One of the course objectives: "Create an annotated bibliography as a result of a comprehensive literature search."
- We are in the process of conducting a literature search.
- You are exploring a topic in CS by examining the published literature related to that subject.
- Last time we discussed (somewhat) where to start.
- Look at ACM-SIGS
- Look at scholar.google.com
- The key is to find Something.
- We will continue in two directions.
- How do I pursue this lead?
- How do I create an annotated bibliography.
- Annotated Bib
- What is an annotated bib?
- What is a bibliography
- Attached to a paper.
- Gives a pointer to sources used in the paper.
- So what is an annotated bib?
- Stand alone, not part of another paper.
- Contains pointers to sources
- But also contains an annotation, or evaluation of the source.
- A pot of gold if done well
- Early on in my PhD work, I found an annotated bib discussing computational steering systems.
- Someone had already collected the major papers related to this topic.
- And everyone was referencing this.
- If you can find an annotated bib in your area you are off to a great start.
- What about the annotation?
- Let's take a look at the rubric to see what I want.
- Look at the line on annotations and evaluation
- So is it an Abstract? Why or why not?
- There is a list on wikipedia
- For me,
- This is a living document.
- As you find sources, add them with an annotation of not yet processed.
- As you read them, add an annotation.
- As you reference them, improve your annotation.
- If you have an ongoing research project, this is a document you could hand to a new partner to get them up to speed.
- Tools for an annotated bib
- I use latex
-
- This is an ancient typesetting system.
- Or a markup language for documents.
- The package I use.
- Look here
- You could do it in word, but it looks like a pain.
- I am sure that there are other automated tools for this.
Another pot of goals is the survey article
- Deandre and I found this one last night
- A Panorama of Artificial and Computational Intelligence in Games.
- Identifies 10 areas for AI in games.
- 21 pages of goodness
- 145 different sources cited.
- IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence in AI and Games (A journal that could be gold for this area)
- Published in 2015
- 127 citations.
Following the graph.
- We have sort of discussed this, but let's do so for real.
- The first paper
- Scholar.google.com
- Look at a sig or society
- Look at a journal
- Look for a conference.
- Other papers
- Forward
- google scholar
- papers that cite the one you found.
- Papers at the conference/journal/... where the paper you found was published
- Papers at future versions of the conference/journal, ...
- Other papers by the author(s)
- Reverse
- Follow the citations, down and up.
- Papers at past versions of the conference.
