Personal Vs Enterprise-Class Database Systems
- Microsoft Access is a personal database system
- It is a DBMS
- It is also a database application generator.
- But it is mostly designed for personal use/ small workgroups
- It is very good at hiding the technology from the user.
- But this will eventually become a problem for larger databases
- It seems to me unexcusable for anyone to have come through this class
- To not have at least played with MS Access
- To not understand the difference between MS Access and a larger DBMS system.
- Show the pictures on page 14/15 and discuss this.
- Enterprise-Class DBMS
- Have a little rant about mainframes.
- EC DBMS support Client Server programming
- Across MANY systems
- Web server interaction/integration.
- Support for third pary extensions (dashboard)
- XML (and other) based communications.
- Look at figure 1-17, page 16.
