Personal Vs Enterprise-Class Database Systems

• Microsoft Access is a personal database system
  • It is a DBMS
  • It is also a database application generator.
• But it is mostly designed for personal use/ small workgroups
• It is very good at hiding the technology from the user.
• But this will eventually become a problem for larger databases
• It seems to me unexcusable for anyone to have come through this class
  • To not have at least played with MS Access
  • To not understand the difference between MS Access and a larger DBMS system.
• Show the pictures on page 14/15 and discuss this.
• Enterprise-Class DBMS
  • Have a little rant about mainframes.
  • EC DBMS support Client Server programming
  • Across MANY systems
  • Web server interaction/integration.
  • Support for third pary extensions (dashboard)
  • XML (and other) based communications.
  • Look at figure 1-17, page 16.
