  1. Counting
     • If I have n bits, how many encodings can I generate?
     • If I need k encodings, how many bits do I need?
  2. Basic unit conversion: dimensional analysis.
     • Introduce CPI
     • Program needs 7x10¹¹ instructions
     • Clock rate of 1GHz
     • CPI of 3
     • How long will it run?
  3. The >Intel Atom N270 Processor runs at a speed of 1.60 GHz. What is the length of a clock cycle?

     	 1.60 GHz is 1.6 x 109 Hz
     
     	 A 1 Hz = 1 cycle/ 1second
     
     	 We want to know seconds per cycle
     
     	    1 second
     	 -------------- =  .625x10-9 seconds/ 1 cycle
     	 1.6x109 cycles 
     
     	           = 625x10-12seconds/1 cycle
     
              This is not an acceptable unit, so we need to change units.
     
              1x10-12 seconds = 1 picosecond
     	 
     	       625x10-12seconds x 1 picosecond
     	                          -------------
     	 		          10-12 seconds
     	       = 625 picoseconds.
