Lab: Rootly Powers.
Short Description:
This lab is intended to introduce you to some of the "powers" associated with the root or administrator account on linux/unix.
Goals
When you finish this lab, you should have:
- Discovered the difference between a normal user ad the superuser or administrator on a *nix system.
- Learned about permissions of files and the *nix file system.
- Learned about processes and signals.
- Learned some basic *nix commands to deal with processes and files.
Step 1: Setup
- You should have a copy of Rootly.ova downloaded to your machine in a location where you can find it.
- If you are in the lab, this file may already be on your desktop or in a designated spot, please check with your instructor or the lab assistant.
- This file is quite large. You might want to download it while on campus.
- Start virtual box by clicking on the desktop icon or search for it in the search bar.
- If you do not have virtual box installed, you will need to install it.
- Please consult your instructor or a lab assistant.

- Loading the Machine
- Make sure that the Tools tab is selected to produce the image above.

- Click on the Import button.

- Select the file browser button on the popup

- Locate the Rootly.ova file and select Next
- This will bring up a settings menu.
- You can change "hardware" and other settings here.
- Since we are sharing accounts in the lab, please rename the machine
- Double click on the name Rootly
- Add your name (or group name) to the machine name.

- Click on the Import button at the bottom of the screen.
- This will cause VirtualBox to import the new guest machine.
- This may take some time.

- Once the import process is finished, the machine will show up on the menu on the left.

- Congratulations, you have installed a guest machine.
- You can now boot the guest machine by clicking on the name in the tool box and selecting start
- Booting will take a little time, but eventually you will be presented with a login screen.
