Lab 1
The purpose of this lab is to help you become familiar with the linux environment in our department.
When you finish this lab you should:
- Have logged into cslab41
- Changed your password
- Used the joe editor to create a file
- used the linux man pages
- downloaded and saved a file
- created a .forward file (if you want one)
- emailed a file.
In addition you should understand somewhat what you are doing and how to
obtain further help.
I expect that you have read the material covered in class
As you are working through this exercise, you will be asked a number of
questions, please keep notes on the answers, as you will be required to
submit a report at the end.
Please do the following:
- Login to cslab41.
- Change your password.
- Read the man page for the passwd command
- What are the general guideline for constructing passwords? You will
need this for later on.
- Download this file, save it as lab1
- Start joe, exit
- Start joe in help mode.
- Start joe and edit lab1, experiment with cursor movement in joe,
- What do the keys ^KH do in joe?
- What does ^KL do in joe?
- Add your answers to the questions in the file you are editing.
- Add your name, and email address to this file.
- Save the file
- start pine
- send the file lab1 to dbennett@edinboro.edu
- Send a copy to yourself.
- Make the subject Lab1 Report
- Attach the file
- Type in a brief message
- If you wish, use joe to create a .forward file to send your email to
another account.
