Testing Your Program

• To test your program with my test data
  • Compile your program on cslab103
    • The following instructions assumes your program is called myprog.
  • Run my test script:

    •  ~dbennett/130/program2/checker.sh myprog

  • This will produce a very long set of output.

  • You should compare your output to my output.
    • From now on, we will require your output to be in the correct format.
• Feedback
  • If your program did not compile, you received a 0 and no redo.
  • In the future, if your code does not work on the given input, your code will receive a 0 and possibly no chance for redo.
  • You need to do input and output according to the specification.
    • There are too many of you for me to "eyeball" the output to see if it is correct.
    • From now on, I will be using an automated process to do this.
    • If your input is not in the specified order, your program will be wrong.
    • If your output is not in the correct format, your program will be wrong.
  • When in doubt, the homework assignment contains the standard
    • In the write up.
    • In the examples.
  • Don't use control structures unless you need them.
    • Fixing grains of rice with a while loop is not efficient.
      • It could take hundreds of iterations.
      • While the % and / takes a single instruction each.
    • There is no need for an if statement.
  • Make sure you test your program.
    • Many of you didn't include all of your data in the computation.
  • Make sure that you listen to in class discussion.
    • Many of you tried endUnit - startUnit and this produced a negative number of one of the examples.
  • Don't use magic numbers like 4 and 6
  • Do use the local convention for declaring variables and identifiers.
  • Learn how to indent.
    • Look at the book.
    • Look at my examples.
    • If unsure, ASK
  • Follow all other items of the local convention as well
