At the end of this session you should be able to:

Describe how to access your linux account.
Logon to your linux account.
Describe what makes a good password.
Successfully change your password.
Successfully log off.

Access to your account:

You will be using a set of machines in the Mathematics and Computer Science department.
- cslab41 - the server, Slackware Linux
- Some other linux boxes - not working yet
- Some Solaris boxes - status unknown
What is UNIX/LINUX?
- An Operating System.
- A Multiuser Multitasking operating system.
- An invention of AT\&T Bell Labs
- Improved by Many People (UCB, GNU ...)
- Many different os's (HPUX, Solaris, AIX, IRIX, OSF/1 ...)
- Linus' Unix, (LINUX)
- The best darn OS ever written.

- On your desktop here, look for the teraterm pro icon that points to cslab41.
Username Password
- Your username is in the form f######l where
  - f is the first initial of your first name
  - l is the first initial of your last name
  - ###### are the last six digits of your banner id
  - ```

    has user name d345678b

- Your password is your birthday in the form mmddyy
  - mm is the digit code for the month in which you were born
  - dd is the day on which you were born
  - yy are the last two digits of the year on which you were born.
  - Example:

Try to be accurate here. Quite often, a user will be suspended after a number of bad logon attempts for security reasons.
Log on now please
The initial prompt
- unix greets you with a very friendly prompt.
- It tells what machine we are logged into
- Also what directory we are in (Kinda).
- You can customize this quite a bit.
You should change your password as soon as you log on.
- Use the unix passwd command.
- Before you use it, type man passwd
- Please type man passwd now.
  - Please pay attention to the sections on
    - Password Changes
    - Hints for user passwords
- Please think of a new password and change your password now
Side Note: Accounts, password, and security
- Please do not attempt to bypass system secruity
  - This can lead to criminal prosicution.
  - This can leed to dismissal from the university.
  - This can make people really upset.
  - If, for some reason, you want to investigate UINX security, please contact someone (me, Mr. Molnar, Ms. Hillman) BEFORE you do anything.
- So why do I care if my account is secure?
  - Hate mail to president@whitehouse.gov
  - Hate mail to me
  - Theft of your programs (remember the cheating lecture)
  - The entire system becomes easier to comprimise - loss of the machine.
  - You will need to be security conscience in future employment.
- So how do I make a good password? - See man passwd above.

The ls command

Please type man ls
Ok, so that was a bad idea, here are some command line arguments you might want to know.
- -a list all of the files in a directory.
- -l list files in long format
  - -rwxr-xr-x describes permissions on a file
  - the owner is given
  - The group is given
  - The size in bytes is given
  - The last modification date and time are given
  - THe file name is given
- -t sort by time.
- -r show the entries in reverse order.
- -d shows the information about the directory, not its contents.
You might also want to use the * character for pattern matching
- * matches 0 or more characters
- ls a* lists all files starting with an a
- ls *html lists all files that end with html
If you havn't been playing with the ls command, please do so now. You may want to cd /usr/bin for a directory with some files in it.

To log off, type exit

Make sure that you log off of the windows machine as well.
