Class Intro

• What are we doing here?
  • Historically we needed this class.
  • But we also need to work on problem solving more.
  • I need you (cs majors) to learn some specific things.
  • And we want to learn more about computers.
• In chapter 1, our authors say that their goals are
  • To give you a broad understanding of how a computing system works.
  • To help you develop an appreciation for and understanding of the evolution of modern computing systems.
  • To give you enough information about computing so that you can decide weather you wish to pursue the subject further.
• How will we do this?
  • Lectures/Discussion
    • I encourage you to get the book and read it.
    • I will make up notes (from the book) and discuss them.
    • I would like you to participate.
  • Homework
    • Hopefully this will allow you to learn the material better.
  • Tests
    • Mostly short answer.
    • Some problems.
    • I will expect some definitions.
    • If we discuss it, it is testable.

  • I am never confident being the sole source of information.
  • You can get copies of this book for around $20 used, and that will be fine.
  • I would appreciate if you acquire and read the book.
