Lab 3

This lab will allow you to explore representation systems.

Please do the following :

• Lab 3 a,b and c. All exercises (there are a total of 7)
• Starting on page 81 of the book please do the following

  • Represent the numbers -12 and 14 in 5 bit sign magnitude and 5 bit two's compliment.
  • Create a keyword encoding scheme, using at least 5 words. Encode the following lines of Walt Whitman's O Captain! My Captain!. What compression ratio (in terms of characters) did you achieve?

    O Captain! my Captain! Our fearful trip is done,
    The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
    The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
          But O heart! heart! heart!
                O the bleeding drops of red,
                      Where on the deck my Captain lies,
                           Fallen cold and dead.
