Word Chapter 1
- Today we begin working on word.
- Word is a document preparation system.
- At one time it was aimed at paper documents.
- But as time goes by, it becomes more and more diverse
- Create simple web pages.
- Totally electronic documents.
- Section 1
- This section will focus on
- Starting A document
- Customizing your word environment
- Making a document more readable.
- Different ways to view a document.
- Distributing a document.
- Document Properties.
- Starting a document
- When you start a new word document you have the ability to
- Start with a blank document
- Start from a document template.
- Templates are nice, they have some pre-formatting
- Sometimes called a boilerplate
- Contains predefined language
- Or layouts.
- Do a quick search for minutes
- The matter of return (enter)
- You know this ...
- You only press the enter key when you are done with a complete paragraph, or list item or ...
- Inside of a paragraph, don't press enter, word will handle it.
- But why not?
- Word will adjust as we change formatting and keep the paragraph as one logical unit.
- She introduces the hide/show button on the Home tab.

- This becomes useful later when diagnosing problems with word documents.
- NEVER NEVER introduce a bunch of returns to move to the next page.
- Use Page Break on the Insert tab. More on this later

- Inserting Text (Merging Documents)

- Don't copy and paste an entire document...
- Insert tab, far right Object drop down menu, select Text from file

- Select a file and it is added to your document.
- Save a document
- Save
- Save as
- PAY attention to where you save your document.
- Spell checking and grammar checking, use it.
- Thesaurus (highlight a word, right click, select synonyms

- Word Count
- Active by default in the status bar (lower left of screen)
- Or Review tab, Word Count button for more details.

- They show how to customize the ribbon and the quick access toolbar
- Look this over.
- Make sure you have the redo and undo buttons at in the quick access toolbar.
- Section 2
- Headers and footers are easy,
- Insert tab, Header & Footer
- Or just click in a header or footer area.
- This will bring up a Header & Footer Toolstab.
- This is word's way to give you access to a specialized set of tools.
- You can add formatted or unformulated information to headers and footers.
- To exit
- Click on the Close Header and Footer button
- Or double click in the text area.
- We will do more with headers and footers later.
- Symbols, which are not on the keyboard.
- Insert tab, Symbols drop down menu.
- Margins
- Page Layout tab, Margins drop down menu
- While we are here, look at the Orientation menu.
- Watermark
- Design tab, Watermark drop down.
- There are multiple document views
- Status Bar
- View tab
- I use the Print Layout most often
- The Web Layout is useful if you are creating a web page.
- The Outline view is good if you are working with a large document.
- The ZOOM feature is nice as well.

- They discuss how to check documents for compatibility and hidden information.

- Do hands on exercises 1 (page 151-156), 2(168-173) and 3 (180-183)
- When you are done with these call me over so I can talk to you about them.
