Tragedy of the first order is a rare phenomenon.  It came into being in Greece in the fifth century B.C., where it flourished for a while, and it did not appear again until some two thousand years later when Shakespeare wrote Hamlet in 1600.  The second incarnation of the tragedy, Hamlet, differs greatly from the first in form and method.
