Page Numbers in Larger Documents
- A reference is here
- This is not hard but it does require Attention To Detail
- Start with this document
- A cover page
- A table of Contents
- A Number of Heading 1 chapters.
- A Bib
- An Index.
- Important: I have marked the different chapters with Even Page Breaks.
- I want to
- No page number on the title page.
- Number the chapters with chapter title #-# on the even pages
- Number the chapters with -#- on the odd pages
- Number the end material with roman numerals.
- Since I want to number by chapters, I need to number the chapters.
- On the Home tab, Paragraph group, select the Multilevel List dropdown.
- Select the Chapter style
-
- The heading 1 selections will change from
-
- To
-
- Unfortunately, this will also mark the Index and the Bib as chapters.
- I really don't want this so just change the style of each to be TOC Heading
- To see the change, go to the Contents, and update the entire table.
- Getting Ready to number pages
- Normally headers are copied from section to section.
- This is the desired behavior most of the time.
- But we want to override this.
- This is done (in both headers and footers) by removing the link to the previous section.
- Removing link to previous.
- I would not do this until the ENTIRE document was laid out.
- Click in the header of any page, but probably the first page of text would be the best.
-
- Notice
- Each section is identified in both the footer and header
- Same as Previous as well as Link To Previous are displayed.
- I will click in the Header of Section 3 and then on the Link to Previous button.
- Notice the Same as Previous message in the HEADER ONLY has disappeared.
-
- I can now make changes to Section 3 and it will not make changes to the document before this.
- Mark Different Odd & Even Pages as active
- Insert a page number
- It does not matter here but unmark Different First Page
- This changed the Link to Previous so unmark it.
- Move the to right hand side of the top
- Insert a page number
- Format the page number
- Start at 1
- Include Chapter Number
-
- You will need to repeat this for each section.
- In section 5, you will need to add an odd page number as well.
- Once we reach the Bib/Index.
- Make sure link to previous is turned off for each page.
- Delete the page number at the top.
- Move to the footers
- Remove Link to Previous
- Remove Different First Page
- Remove Different Even and Odd
- Format as upper case Roman
- Add the page number.
- Finally, refresh the TOC, and Index.
- Hope you have been good.
- Look the document over and fix any problems.
- But be patient.
