Formatting
- In general, your documents should be readable and well formatted.
- This means that all items are labeled
- Formatted appropriately, money with $, percent with %, ...
- Data fits in cells
- Data is reasonably aligned. Generally:
- Headings centered.
- Numbers right aligned
- Exploring font styles and effects
- Discusses front group, just like in word.
- Format cell choice in the quick menu.
- You can most likely skip this section.
- Adjusting row heights and column widths
- This is an important skill
- Note ###### means the cell is not wide enough
- Double clicking on the column separator will fix this.
- Adjusting groups of columns or rows to be the same.
- Easy section, but worth a watch.
- Working with alignment and Wrap Text
- This is easy yet important.
- <alt> enter adds a hard break in a text field
- He shows cell merging, but we have already done that.
- Designing borders
- Again an easy section, but worth a look.
- Borders can make it much easier to understand a document.
- He also shows how to turn off grid lines in a worksheet.
- He further explores the Format Cells dialog box.
- Exploring numeric and special formatting
- This is an important section. It is must watch.
- Formatting numbers appropriately make a difference your ability to understand what is going on.
- There are many formatting options.
- I am concerned about commas (,) dollar signs ($), percent signs (%)
- I am also concerned about controlling decimals displayed.
- Account mark negatives in () or in red sometimes.
- Notice the special formatting for SS-NO and Phone Numbers.
- Formatting numbers and dates
