Spring 2009, CBE Information
- A competency test out for the CSCI104 class is available for those that already have the skills that this class is providing. The student must not have taken the CSCI104 class or this test before. Having passed this test, the paying student will receive the 3 credits and not have to take the class.
- The test this fall term 2009 is offered Thursday Sept 03 from 5 to 7pm and Tuesday, Sept 08 from 10am to 12 noon. Please contact Professor John Onderko via e-mail jonderko@edinboro.edu or in person at 201 Doucette Hall to arrange for a seat at one of these scheduled times
- An overview of the process is as follows:
- Obtain Competency test form and CSCI104 Competency test information sheet from the Math / CS office in 200 Doucette. Forms also available from your advisor or from Hamilton Hall lobby
- Complete the form. Including three signatures: advisor, Dept chair of Math /CS, Bursar (after having paid the fee...~ $75)
- Present the completed form to the Professor Onderko at the time of the competency exam.
- Drop / add classes by date specified by the University. (Consider adding now, it is easier to drop later)
- Professor Onderko notes: This test should be taken at the earliest scheduled date as drop/add period ends at the latest on SOTS at 12midnight Sept 07. However, dropping the CSCI104 class after passing the test taken on Sept 08 will be permitted.
The exam is open book and notes.
The Word, Excel, and PowerPoint parts are all hands-on the computer. You will be given handouts of a Word document, Excel spreadsheet, and PowerPoint presentation, and you will recreate these handouts on the computer. The computer systems and Internet part of the exam will be a combination of hands-on and written fill-in-the blank. This part of the exam addresses hardware and software and general questions about computer networks and the Internet.
Among other things, for Word you need to know formatting, word count, headers and footers, tables, styles, creating a table of contents, and working with images. For Excel, you need to know formatting, formulas and functions, absolute and relative cell referencing, and charts. The PowerPoint part of the exam will be more simple. Still, you need to know how to make slides, formatting, slide numbers, an organization chart, and transitions and animation. You will also need to know how to copy from one application to another.
Grading is "P" pass or "F" fail. To receive a passing grade, you need to earn the equivalent of a 'D' grade or better. Study hard--the exam will be of a similar difficulty to what is given in CSCI 104. For now, the student may choose to take the exam using the 2003 Microsoft Office software, or the Office 2007 software on the PC.
