The Process Stack

• We have discussed the stack some
• stackEx.asm, the code for these notes.
• Jorgensen chapter 9 discusses it in detail.
• There are two basic stack manipulation operations
  • push operand
  • pop operand
  • operand can be a register or memory, but not an immediate.
• Push

  • rsp = rsp- 8
    mem[rsp] = operand
           

• Pop

  • operand = mem[rsp]
    rsp += 8
            

• We will use the stack to pass parameters
  • Our choices are not value and reference, they are value and pointer (address).
  • In stackMem.asm we have a demo of how this might work.
    • just referring to a memory location is the address.
    • [label] gets the value.
